The World's Biggest Oil Reserves - Iraq
Forbes.com recently examined the five largest oil reserves in the world. Of the five, three are located in Iraq.
Top Oil Fields of the Future
- Ghawar (Saudi Arabia): At 160 miles long and 16 miles wide, Ghawar is estimated to have 30 billion barrels of recoverable oil. Ghawar produces approximately 4.5 million barrels per day from six different areas.
- West Qurna (Iraq): With an estimated 21 billion barrels of oil, West Qurna is the largest oil field in Iraq. The field was recently awarded to a joint venture between ExxonMobile and Royal Dutch Shell. The venture seeks to raise production to 2.3 million barrels per day from approximately 300,000 barrels per day.
- Majnoon (Iraq): The Majnoon oil field is located in southern Iraq along the Euphrates River. Due to its proximity to the Iranian border, the Majnoon oil field only produces approximately 50,000 barrels per day. However, it's reserves are estimated at 13 billion barrels and has the potential to produce approximately 1.8 million barrels per day. Royal Dutch Shell PLC and Petronas, a Malaysian oil company, signed a contract to develop the field in January 2010.
- Rumaila (Iraq): Rumaila currently accounts for approximately half of Iraq's total production with outputs at nearly 1 million barrels per day. BP and China National Petroleum were recently awarded a contract to develop Rumaila and hope to trip production by investing nearly $15 billion into the project.
- Khuzestan (Iran): This province is home to a number of different oil fields estimated to have 100 billion barrels of oil. This region currently represents 90% of Iran's total oil production.
According to Christopher Helman of Forbes.com, "Given the size of Iraq's underdeveloped giants [oil fields] there are no technical reasons why within 10 years the country can't supplant both Iran and Russia to become the world's No. 2 oil producer after Saudi Arabia."
Iraq reaches deal with Petronas, Japex over Garraf field
A joint bid by Malaysia's Petronas and Japan's Japex was awarded a contract on Saturday to work on the Garraf oil field in southern Iraq, Oil Minister Hussein al-Shahristani said.

The pair had requested 1.49 dollars per barrel of oil extracted from the reservoir and projected output at 230,000 barrels of oil per day (bpd).
